America’s Millenium Challenge Corporation (MCC) and Africa50 are planning to set up an infrastructure investment platform for Africa. It’s hoped that the Millennium Impact for Infrastructure Accelerator (or MIIA) will encourage the development of bankable infrastructure deals that will deliver measurable social and economic impacts as well as financial returns, thus spurring additional investments into the sector on the continent.

MIIA will invest in projects across the infrastructure spectrum including water and sanitation, health, education, transportation, power, and telecommunications. It’s well-known that Africa’s infrastructure investment gap yawns wide compared with other regions around the globe, often due to the lack of bankable projects as well as difficulties in accurately measuring the environmental and social impacts of many projects.
