Last week in brief…March 7th, 2022

As has been the case in many a recent week, the largest private capital deals in Africa last week fell into the venture capital bucket. We reported on the two largest. M-KOPA, a fintech business raised $75 million from a group of new and returning investors led by Al Gore’s Generation Investment Management and New York-based Broadscale Group. There were four other investors in the group – CDC, LGT Lightrock, LocalGlobe, and HEPCO – providing capital that will be used to consolidate M-KOPA’s position in its existing markets as well as start exploring and testing opportunities in other markets on the continent. This round brings the total amount of capital raised by M-KOPA to $190 million.
